Newly-qualified BOX instructors ready to deliver to community groups

Youth workers, teachers, officers from Surrey Police and physical therapists were among those to successfully pass a BOX Instructor Course last weekend. Held at the Samson Centre in Guildford, it will enable them to help young people and adults they work become more active in a sport that's new and interesting to them. As newly-qualified instructors, the 14 participants will now be able to deliver fitness-based, non-contact session using boxing skills. The course was originally due to take place in March 2020, but was cancelled due to Covid-19 outbreak, so it was with great delight that the course finally went ahead. It was funded by England Boxing’s partners at Active Surrey, developing a new team of boxing instructors from a variety of community groups and settings and spreading the benefits of boxing participation. Five of the attendees came from the Samson Centre itself, which is a registered charity that supports people with Multiple Sclerosis. They are looking forward to using the course to support their clients with building strength, becoming more mobile and developing confidence in their abilities. The course was delivered by England Boxing Coach Educator and Talent Pathway Coach, Adam Haniver. England Boxing’s Club Support Officer for the Southern Counties, Avoen Perryman, who helped organise the course, said: “I just want to say thank you to Active Surrey for being so supportive, as well as to Adam for delivering. “Most importantly, I’d like to say thank you to the group of attendees who are going to help spread the benefits of boxing to people that might not otherwise have confidence, opportunity or support to try it for themselves. “Our sport reaches diverse communities and people across the country, and we've now reached even further.”

“The delivery of the course was ideal as it was very hands-on and relied on the volunteers constantly demonstrating what they were learning.”
